Nicholas Trott Long is an attorney and consultant devoted to assisting schools, colleges, universities and other non-profit corporations throughout the United States and Canada. *
He focuses his practice on conducting legal audits, and other forms of strategic preventive planning. He is a partner with attorney and consultant, Claire Guthrie Gastañaga in PreventivePractices.com, a program that delivers on-site and web-based training designed to assist colleges and schools in identifying and preventing legal problems before they become expensive lawsuits. He is also, with Michelle Ricci, the creator of the Electronic Policy Guidesm . The Electronic Policy Guidesm contains a proprietary software engine that enables a user to easily locate all relevant institutional policies and legal resources.
He is currently counsel to the Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Rhode Island and general counsel to Rhode Island College. He has also served as General Counsel to the University of Rhode Island and the Community College of Rhode Island and special counsel for many institutions. In addition to more than twenty years in the education field, Mr. Long has served as a criminal trial lawyer for the prosecution and defense and as the Chief of the Rhode Island Attorney General's Civil Division.
He is the co-author of the books Strategic Legal Planning: The College and University Legal Audit and Managing Overseas Liability and Programs, published by College Legal Information, Inc. He is also the author of the sections on affirmative action and non-discrimination in the Legal Deskbook For Administrators of Independent Colleges and Universities, published by Baylor University and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.* The Rhode Island Supreme Court licenses all lawyers in the general practice of law.
