An organizational plan based on the philosophy of continuous progress shall be adopted for continued study and implementation in the Southbridge Schools.
The Southbridge School Committee shall, under the direction of the Rhode Island Department of Education, make and cause to be put into effect in each school, the curriculum, i.e. the educational plan, prescribing the studies to be pursued therein and the introduction and use of textbooks and works of reference.
In this regard, the committee may move to add to, modify or delete portions of studies to be pursued and/or the resources needed to attain the goals and objectives of said studies based upon the recommendations of the superintendent. However, the final decision rests with the Southbridge School Committee.
Instruction shall be regarded as the most important function of the Southbridge School Department. The philosophy guiding this instruction shall be grounded on a belief in the dignity and worth of each individual. Instruction shall be concerned with the development of each child; his or her scholastic achievement, and his or her mental emotional, physical and social growth. Thus, in the education of the child, individual differences as well as common tendencies shall be taken into account.
Primary objectives of instruction shall be intellectual and personal development leading towards excellence in the skills of learning, an inquiring mind, an appreciation of the great cultures and responsible citizenship in our democracy. To these ends, opportunities shall be provided regularly for active participation in a broad range of educational experiences by all students.
All such educational experiences shall be organized into a purposeful curriculum, based on the ideals stated above and with due regard to individual abilities. It shall be subject to continuous study and evaluation and revised as improvement is indicated.
