ARTICLE 12 CLASS COVERAGE
Westerly School District
1. In all instances of teacher absence, the District will strive to provide highly qualified substitutes. Teachers are to maintain a substitute folder inclusive of class lists, any seating charts (if assigned seating is in place), and work assignments and support materials.
2. In cases in which no substitute is available or a teacher leaves unexpectedly during the day and other substitute coverage is not available, the principal shall offer coverage duties to volunteers who shall be provided additional compensation for this coverage service. These volunteers must indicate their willingness to serve as "cover volunteers" by no later than the tenth day of the academic calendar. If no volunteers are available, the principal shall assign coverage duty on a rotating basis to all teachers that have not volunteered based on their availability during any non-teaching period. These coverage assignments will be equitably rotated and no teacher shall be allowed to refuse covering the assigned class. The rotation shall be without compensation until the teacher has served three times in a given school year, after which time the teacher shall be compensated for the class coverage.
3. Under extenuating circumstances, students may be dispersed to other classrooms at the same grade level (elementary and middle) due to a lack of a substitute teacher with pay.
